Inden dagens etape førte Patrick Gretsch (Project 1t4i) efter at have vundet gårsdagens prolog. Han forsvarede uden problemer føringen, da rytterne i dag skulle igennem 197,9 kilometer fra Zahara de los Atunes til Benalmadena i Andalusien i Spanien.

Et udbrud slap af sted efter tre kilometer. Det bestod af de fire ryttere Will Routley (SpiderTech powered by C10), Javier Ramirez (Andalucia), Luis Angel Mate (Cofidis) og Daniel Dominguez (Team NSP-Ghost).

Undervejs prøvede Grische Niermann (Rabobank) at køre alene op til de fire lykkeriddere, men forgæves. Også feltet måtte køre forgæves efter dem, da de fire udbryderne viste sig at holde til målstregen. Her var hjemmebanerytteren Javier Ramirez den stærkeste, da han slog Luis Angel Mate i en tæt spurt. Will Routley formåede akkurat at holde feltet bag sig, hvor Oscar Freire (Katusha) vandt spurten foran Juan José Lobato (Andalucia) og Manuel Cardoso (Caja Rural).

Dermed kunne Javier Ramirez tage den største sejr i karrieren og dem femte sæsonsejr til Andalucia-holdet. De fire andre kom i 2.2-løbet Vuelta a Chile tilbage i januar måned.
