Levi Leipheimer øgede forspringet

nullFemte etape i Amgen Tour of California var en 23,4 km enkeltstart i og omkring den danske by Solvang.

Selvom solen skinnede, så var der vind på ruten, og det kunne få betydning for de lidt lettere ryttere i feltet. På forhånd havde danske Brian Vandborg håbet, at han kunne blande sig mellem de bedste, men det hårde arbejde på de to foregående etaper havde tæret på kræfterne, så den danske Discovery Channel rytter måtte give sig tilfreds med en mere anonym præstation.

Fabian Cancellara stillede for første gang til start i sin regnbuefarvede trøje, og han kørte også et ganske flot løb, og i en tid, som i et godt stykke tid anbragte ham som bedste rytter.

Ivan Basso kørte også en ganske fornuftig enkeltstart, men slet ikke i nærheden af de allerbedste. Hans tid rakte dog til en plads som nummer 9. Dagens overraskelse stod Jason McCartney dog for, og det så længe ud til, at der måske ville komme en alternativ vinder. Med tiden 30.05.140 lå han længe som den bedst placerede, og det var først, da Jens Voigt og Levi Leipheimer nærmede sig første tidstagning, at der kom alvorlig konkurrence til McCartney. Ved første mellemtid lå Leipheimer bedst til blandt alle.
 
Dagens skuffelse stod den tredobbelte enkeltstartsverdensmester, Michael Rogers, for. T-Mobile rytteren kom i mål i en tid, der var næsten et minut dårligere end Jason McCartney. Heller ikke Chris Horner fra Lotto-mandskabet formåede at forsvare sin placering i det samlede klassement, han kom i mål i tiden 31.33, og det gjorde, at han raslede langt ned i rækkerne.

Til gengæld var der andre, som havde bedre power i benene. Med tiden 29.58.51 hamrede Team CSC’s tyske racer, Jens Voigt, en solid cementering af hans evner på en enkeltstart igennem. Desværre rakte det ikke til en samlet sejr, for umiddelbart efter kom Discovery Channels kaptajn i mål i en endnu bedre tid. Levi Leipheimer, som havde valgt ikke at stille til start i den gule trøje, men i stedet havde holdets aerodynamiske dragt på, kom i mål i vindertiden 29.40.44, og altså 18 sekunder bedre end Jens Voigt.

I det hele taget var det en kamp mellem amerikanske Discovery Channel og danske Team CSC på dagens enkeltstart med en lille sejr til CSC’erne. Af de ti bedst placerede på dagen er de fem fra det danske hold, mens fire kører for Discovery Channel. 10. pladsen gik til hollandske Bram De Groot fra Rabobank.

I det samlede klassement lykkedes det dermed Levi Leipheimer at øge sig forspring til Jens Voigt på andenpladsen.

Jakob Piil kørte i øvrigt også en fornuftig enkeltstart. Det er jo normalt ikke hans livret, men hans tid rakte til en 19. plads.
