O'Grady og Co. i offensiven i Australien

nullI nat blev 4. etape af den 56. udgave af Jayco Herald Sun Tour kørt i Australien. Etapen blev kørt fra Beechworth til Falls Creek over 116.5 km. Rytterne skulle over flere stigninger, og det betød stor spredning i feltet, som nu kun tæller 77 ryttere efter dagens etape.

4. etape blev en stor europæisk dag i Australien, hvor hollandske Joost Van Leijen overtog den samlede føring af Jayco Herald Sun Tour efter en andenplads på dagens etape efter schweiziske Steve Morabito (Astana). Indtil videre havde de australske ryttere ellers domineret løbet og podierne, men stigninger tog kræfterne fra hjemmebane rytterne.

"Det var en fantastisk dag for mig," sagde Van Leijen efter etapen og tilføjede: “I dag følte jeg mig rigtig godt kørende, og jeg tror, at jeg kan vinde denne Tour. I øjeblikket føler jeg, at jeg kan gøre alt.”

Steve Morabito (Astana) vandt dog etapen foran Van Leijen (Holland) og Trent Lowe (Jayco). Trioen kom alle til mål med franskmanden Julien Mazet (Astana) på 4. pladsen blot 3 sekunder efter. Morabito kunne faktisk have ført løbet, men modtog på løbets anden etape en tidsstraf på 20 sekunder for motorpacing.

Team CSCs Stuart O’Grady bruger løbet til at komme tilbage efter hans skade. CSC-rytteren kører løbet for det australske landshold.

"Vores plan var at sætte pres på opad stigningen Tawonga Gap, blot for at give lidt stress. Kort efter ramte vi bjerget Beauty. Det var en holdpræstation, hvor vi gik frem så mange som muligt. Drengene gjorde et fantastisk job, og derefter var resten op til Trent (Lowe, red.),” forklarer Stuart O’Grady efter dagens etape.

O'Gradys holdkammerat Trent Lowe avancerede efter dagens etape til 4. pladsen samlet.
