Philippe Gilbert vandt i Algarve

Der var ikke kørt mange meter af den 157,5 kilometer lange etape fra Estadio Algarve til Albufeira før Arturo Mora (Caja Rural), Christian Meier (United Health Care) og Ricardo Mestre (Tavira-Prio) havde åbnet et forspring ned til feltet. Lidt senere fik også César Fonte (Barbot-Siper) kontakt til de forreste og de fire fik hurtigt åbnet et pænt forspring ned til feltet, så de midtvejs på etapen havde små seks minutters forspring.

Men med en masse stærke sprintere som Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Cervélo), Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo Bank), Allan Davis (Astana), Michael Matthews (Rabobank), Andre Greipel (Omega Pharma), Greg Henderson (Sky), Gerald Ciolek (Quick Step), Borut Bozic (Vacansoleil), Jens Keukeleire (Cofidis) og Robert Forster (United Health Care) i feltet, var det dog en stakket frist for de forreste og med lidt under 10 kilometer tilbage blev Ricardo Mestre som den sidste udbryder indhentet.

De sidste kilometer ind mod mål blev der angrebet i højre og venstre side, og blandt andet Tony Martin (HTC-High Road) var yderst aktiv, men det var et samlet felt som kørte ind på de sidste 1000 meter.

Inde på den sidste kilometer var der en lille bakke, og den udnyttede Philippe Gilbert til at slå det afgørende hul, så han kunne køre først over stregen som vinder af etapen. Et par sekunder efter Gilbert vandt Gerald Ciolek (Quick Step) feltets spurt og tog dermed andenpladsen.
