Steve Chainel vandt i Panne

nullRytterne skulle i dag ud på 198 kilometer fra Middelkerke til Oudenaarde og det endte med at ti ryttere fik slået hullet ned til feltet. Blandt de ti ryttere sad blandt andet Steve Chainel og HTC-Columbia rytteren Aleksejs Saramotins, som sidste år kørte for Team Designa Køkken, samt Leif Hoste fra Lotto.

Forspringet frem til de forreste lå hele dagen mellem et og to minutter, og det var især på grund af et stort stykke arbejde fra QuickStep holdet, som var en af de hold der ikke ramte udbruddet.

På trods af at Liquigas holdet også var repræsenteret i frontgruppen, så var det dem som åbnede løbet med små 50 kilometer til mål, da de med alle mand i front af feltet splittede det hele. Det betød af blandt andet Daniel Oss og Daniele Bennati begge fra det italienske hold, sammen med Garmin rytteren David Millar, Astana rytteren Enrico Gasparotto og Acqua rytteren Luca Paolini fik lukket hullet op til de forreste.

Hurtigt blev der åbnet et pænt hul ned til feltet, så det var blandt de forreste små 20 ryttere at det hele skulle afgøres. Ind mod mål blev gruppen hele tiden mindre og mindre, og med under ti kilometer tilbage fik en gruppe på syv ryttere skilt sig afgørende fra. Desværre for Liquigas holdet kom Daniele Bennati ikke med her.

Helt forrest i den lille frontgruppe var David Millar tilfreds med udskilningen, da han satsede mere på at få tid på de andre konkurrenter i klassementet, end at tage etapesejren, så han satte mere eller mindre tempoet ind mod mål.

Med 400 meter til mål åbnede Daniel Oss spurten, han fik Steve Chainel med på hjul og det var ikke noget problem for franskmanden at gå forbi italieneren og tage en suveræn sejr. Også Luca Paoline og Enrico Gasparotto kom stærkt til sidst i spurten og kunne dermed tage anden og tredjepladsen.

Ikke overraskende kom David Millar sidst over stregen i frontgruppen, hvilket betyder, at han er 13 sekunder efter Steve Chainel på førstepladsen. Men eftersom løbet slutter med en 14,75 kilometer lang enkeltstart på torsdag, så er han lige nu storfavorit til den samlede sejr.
