Ny etapesejr til Matthews i Tour of Utah

Et krævende gadeløb over 54,4 kilometer i Salt Lake Citys centrum var, hvad de 110 ryttere i Tour of Utah blev budt på, da de i nat dansk tid skulle køre løbets 4. etape. Som det har været tilfældet indtil flere gang i dette løb, skulle den afgøres i en spurt, og her viste Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) sig endnu engang hurtigst. Det var dermed hans anden etapesejr i løbet, idet han også vandt løbets 2. etape.

I spurten slog Michael Matthews Greg van Avermaet (BMC), der dermed har præsteret ikke at blive dårligere i end nummer to hidtil i dette løb. Den belgiske rytter vandt løbets 1. etape og er herefter blevet nummer to på de efterfølgende tre etaper. Og der er næppe tvivl om, netop Greg van Avermaet er feltets stærkeste ryttere, så længde der ikke skal dystes i endnu mere krævende terræn - og at Michael Matthews er den hurtigste i en spurt.

Efter at et sidste femmandsudbrud med blandt andre Jens Voigt (RadioShack-Leopard) og Francisco Mancebo (5 Hour Energy/Kenda) var kørt ind, angreb nemlig Greg van Avermaet og Matthew Matthews sammen i bunden af den 500 meter stigning, som førte op til mål, og de fik hul, men tillod en større gruppe af nå op, da det taktiske spil satte ind. Ikke desto mindre var det atter BMC og Orica-GreenEdge-rytteren, som havde mest at skyde med, da den afgørende spurt skulle køres og endnu engang altså med australieren som den hurtigste på de sidste meter.

Men trods Greg van Avermaets imponerende serie af etapeplaceringer, indtager han blot løbets samlede andenplads, da Garmin-Sharps Lachlan Morton har formået ikke at tabe tid til BMC-rytteren, men i stedet fastholde det tidsmæssige forspring, han fik, da han vandt løbets 3. etape, og han kan dermed, senere i dag, køre den 5. etape iført løbets førertrøje, mens Greg van Avermaet dog har sikret sig føringen i pointtrøjen foran Michael Matthews.
